Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

Here's a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, the two stars contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The plot starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity takes hold of the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and delivers them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and distant from his social circle. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he can’t drive and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together refrains from painting Tim or Millie the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can experience right now.
